The Destined by E.J. Mellow | REVIEW

I searched for you in the stars tonight.
But I found none
that burned as bright as you.

—Part of a letter from Dev to Molly

With the loss of Terra’s greatest weapon, the war against darkness escalates rapidly, and time is on no one’s side. While Dev struggles to keep his home and hope alive, Molly and Rae find themselves forced to confront a desperately kept secret and quickly learn that a life-altering sacrifice is the asking price to restore order.

Nightmares, betrayal, the fate of two worlds, and one man’s hunger for vengeance lead Molly down a twisted and dark path she fears she might never come back from. Cornered into making a heart-wrenching decision, Molly teeters between deliverance and damnation. Who is worth saving most—a nation or the one she loves?

♡ ♡ ♡ My thoughts ♡ ♡ ♡

A book series so ineffably well written should be illicit.

If writing a review for the first two books in The Dreamland series was hard, just imagine how freaking impossible it is for me now. From the moment when I said my goodbyes to Dev and Molly at the end of The Divide until the moment I got an e-ARC of The Destined on my kindle three weeks ago, I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen in the final novel. I’ve made up so many scenarios in my head, you wouldn’t even believe it. And all of that for nothing. Because once again, E.J Mellow has marvellously succeeded to exceed my expectations.

This amazing woman has a curious way of discombobulating me with her words and out of this world characters, who did nothing but amaze me again with their powerful personalities. I am telling you, she is nefarious (in the best way possible, though). To be honest, I cannot wait to read and love her upcoming books, simply because E.J. is one of those authors that deserve to be immortal just to continue writing mind-blowing novels for their readers. I know, I know, I sound a little bit Mellow obsessed and I am proud to say that I am not denying anything.

There are a million reasons to fall in love with this book and I will try my best to mention a few of the vital ones, hopefully I won’t end up blabbering too much.

The writing style– Until a few years ago, I did not pay too much attention to an author’s writing style, probably because I was younger and thought that every book I read was good and deserved 5 stars. Well, now I can say that I’ve come to appreciate and even admire certain authors, mainly because of the unique way they write. The word choice, the sentence fluency, the vivid images that play in our heads whenever we read something beautifully described, everything contributes to the whole reading experience. Undoubtedly, E.J. masters this art like no other.

The love story– Ok guys, let’s put the cards on the table and acknowledge the fact that Dev and Molly’s love story is one of the main reasons why we all praise this series. If you ask me, I would describe their relationship as the very definition of ‘souls mates’, because no matter what difficulties they had to go through, their love transcended time. And to have my own Aaron moment, I can even say that I am elated they suffered so many atrocities, just to become a whole in the end. What is more, I couldn’t help but internally fangirl at every alone moment these two lovebirds had together. I’ve been eager to read/devour them since my fragile heart has gotten broken at the end of the second novel. Needless to say, the swoon-worthy letters between Molly and Dev were a bonus, just another excuse to officially crown them as the hottest couple ever.

“I love you,” she said. “I love you so much.” In a flash he was above her again, touching the new sunbaked dusting of freckles across her nose and cheeks, letting their bodies glide over each other.
“Love doesn’t do justice to what I feel for you,” he said gruffly, kissing her again. “You are everywhere in me, taking up all the spaces in between. You consume me, Molly Spero.”
They each took pieces of the other that night and gently fused them back together, so in the end there wasn’t him and her, only them.

The bromance– Yes, you read that well, the bromance (between Dev and Rae) deserves to be mentioned on this list. Even though they only had a few moments at the beginning of the book, you could quickly realize how strong their relationship was. Rae’s sacrifice was merely a demonstration of how far would he go for his brother, for Dev.

Rae studied Dev for a long while, his golden eyes shining with his own intense feelings . “Nihil familiā carius,” he said and extended his hand.
“Nihil familiā carius,” Dev returned, and the two stood there, letting the words flow through each other.

Aaron and his Joker like behaviour– You must agree with me when I say that this particular character was an absolute madman and even a little bit seductive in a very strange way. E.J. created the perfect villain, a pure source of evil and sorrow, who got exactly what he deserved in the end. Shivers went down my spine whenever he performed one of his savage acts and when he abducted Molly and tortured her to death I wished from the bottom of my heart to become a character in the book and end his miserably life. I can easily imagine Jared Leto playing his role in a movie, because if there is a fantasy series that deserves to be picked out for the big screen, it would be The Dreamland series.

Hector– This character alone represents a reason enough to love ”The Destined”. If you ever thought that Hector’s presence in the books wasn’t very important, you are completely wrong. Let’s just say that besides Molly, he is the surprise element, the key to finally finding peace, after multiple deaths and dreadful battles have left their marks on both worlds, Terra and Earth. He is also the reason why I cried like a baby towards the ending and why I still have some tears in my eyes as I am finishing this paragraph.

” So I stand silently, unmoving, and soak in the love that Hector now, after so many months, allows me to see. Love for me, for my grandfather, for Terra, and, with his eyes staring behind me, to the girl who watches on.”

For the people who’ve read ”The Dreamer” & ”The Divide”, you MUST end what you’ve already started on a high note. So what are you waiting for to buy this book and love it to death?
For the ones who haven’t heard about this series until now or haven’t had the chance to start it yet, I am begging you to read it! A book trilogy so astounding is hard to find these days and I promise you, you won’t regret it! Now, excuse me while I lock myself in my room and listen to sad music for the rest of the day. Who knows, maybe the excruciating pain of saying goodbye to my favourite characters will go away till tomorrow morning.

This beauty will be released tomorrow, October 17th, so make sure you purchase a copy and enjoy the awesomeness! Also, check out E.J. Mellow’s social accounts because she will probably host many giveaways in the near future and you wouldn’t want to miss that!
