Hello, everyone! Today I’m sharing with you my thoughts on the first two books of ”The Dreamland” Trilogy, written by E.J. Mellow 🙂 And believe me, these books are F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C! Let’s start with the first book, ”The Dreamer”…
It’s night. Always night. Dreams guard against the evil forged by nightmares. Infinite shooting stars illuminate a moonless sky. A city stands alone, surrounded by a darkened field. On its fringes, a man watches one star separate from the masses and fall. What survives the crash will unveil a secret centuries long hidden.
Molly hasn’t slept well since the night of her twenty-fourth birthday. Being struck by lightning might have something to do with it, but then again, her chicken did look a little undercooked at dinner. Whatever the culprit, her life quickly catapults from mundane to insane as, nigh
t after night, Molly is transported through her once dreamless sleep to a mysterious land illuminated by shooting stars.
There she meets the captivating but frustrating Dev, and together they discover Molly possesses a power coveted by his people—the ability to conjure almost anything she desires into existence. Seduced by the possibilities of this gift, Molly shifts her attention from waking life toward the man, the magic, and the world found in her dreams.
But Molly must ask herself—does something truly exist if you only see it when you close your eyes?
Faced with the threat of losing everything—her job, best friend, boyfriend, and most importantly, that little thing called her sanity—Molly will learn just how far she’ll go to uncover what is real and what is merely a figment of her imagination.

’’The Dreamer’’ completely rocked my world and it is really funny how, once again, I fail at finding the right words to describe my feelings. AMAZING? EXTRAORDINARY? These words could fit pretty well, although they still manage to underrate the real level of epicness this book reaches. I could easily incorporate a few dozen gifs in this review, showing you exactly the emotions I went through while reading this jem and write nothing else, but I do not think it would be the wisest thing to do.
Firstly, let me tackle the story and the writing style. Before I read ’’The Dreamer’’, I haven’t encountered any other new adult/fantasy/sci-fi book, at least not one that I remember something about. These 3 genres are my favourite when it comes to my personal preferences so finding a book that encompasses all of them literally sounded like heaven. The fact that the E.J’s idea for the book is original didn’t hurt either. She created a story that takes place in two dimensions, the one we all know very well, which is ours, and the other that she gave life to – Terra Somniorum- a place we come to discover through Molly’s eyes.
After Molly gets hit by lightning, she starts to have dreams of this strange place, that is completely different from her world. A place where there is always night, people wear black clothes from head to toe and have the ability to handle dangerous weapons. Oh, and there is this one handsome guy, Dev, that makes her feel strange emotions from the very beginning and ends up filling an important place in her heart. But why does this happen to her? She had a normal life before, a job, an amazing friend that was more like her sister, Becca, and a very hot boyfriend, Jared. However, because everything happens for a reason, Molly soon finds out that all she has experienced after the accident is real and she represents more than she has ever wanted for Terra. She is the most important opponent in the war against the Metus –some horrible creatures that want to take hold of the Dreamers’ minds and cause irreparable damage in both dimensions- she is STAR OF HOPE.
There is so much stuff happening in this book and I cannot go into many details because that would take forever, but I tried to give you guys a short summary of what happens. E.J’s writing style is absolutely amazing, she describes everything so well you start to have doubts whether you’re watching an action movie or reading a book. I would say the first option is more accurate. What is more, I think we should give her a crown for the best writer when it comes to swoon worthy, belly laughing & nerve-wracking scences between the main characters. Seriously now, everytime Molly and Dev were together, sparks ignited and the sexual tension was unbearable.
Secondly, another reason why this book is freakin’ fantastic is represented by the characters. Actually, everthing that happens wouldn’t be possible without them. I love how everyone has a strong personality and plays a great role in the whole story. My favourite has to be Molly and it was a little bit of a shock to discover such a badass female character in a 24-year-old young woman. Even if she didn’t categorize herself as a strong person, she was and her brave heart and witty comments made me love her even more. She is undoubtedly a heroine and therefore deserves to be mentioned along with the other female role models for young girls in the fantasy literature.
I wonder if you guys have ever gotten bored by love triangles in books. Because I have. And we kind of have a love triangle going on here, as well. On one hand there’s Dev, the guy from Molly’s dreams, and on the other hand is Jared, the real life boyfriend. The funny thing is that this time I enjoyed it and I cannot decide which team I belong to, mainly because both of the boys are amazing in their own way. I’m pretty sure my opinion will change in book two, but until then, I will try to restrain myself from making a decision.
Taking all these points into consideration, I highly recommend you ’’The Dreamland’’ series if you are looking for something new and interesting to read. Although I should warn you that once you start diving into E.J.Mellow’s world, you will not be able to stop reading and crave for more!
Now, let’s move on to the second book 😀
Molly finally uncovers the truth about the strange dreams that plagued her sanity for weeks. Now destined to accept a clandestine role, Molly must find the strength and courage buried deep to push forward and succeed.
With the help of Dev, the roguish blue-eyed man of her dreams—whose dark past resurfaces to haunt him—Molly prepares to test the limits of her newly awakened powers and set right a world on the edge of being consumed by nightmares.
But when an unknown shadow stalks her every step and a shocking revelation about her ancestry comes to light, Molly may find herself forced to make a decision that could leave her alone in the dark and standing on the wrong side of a divide.

Holy freakin’ Metus!!!
Oh God, please give me strength to finish this review…
I honestly do not know how E.J. does it, but every book of hers ends up messing with my heart. After reading ”The Dreamer” and getting proof of her amazing writing skills, I knew ”The Divide” was going to be just as awesome as the first book. Guess what? I was wrong! Because this book was absolutely gut-wrenching and full of emotions, love and hope! Thank you, E.J, thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving birth to such a masterpiece!
This time I’m not going to bother with summing up what happened in the second installement of ”The Dreamland” series, because so many things occured, it would take me a day or two to explain everything. That is the reason why I am going to focus on talking about a few of the many aspects why ”The Divide” is actually way better than ”The Dreamer”. Leave me the pleasure to begin with Molly and Dev’s relationship.
If in the first book I could not decide which team I belong to (even though Dev had a little bit more of my love than Jared), in this one I completely fell in love with Dev from the very beginning. He is one of the best male characters I’ve come across in all the books I’ve read till now that deal with romance. His strength, both physical and emotional, his feelings for Molly and his desire to protect her with his life were amazing and heart melting. The ending shattered me in pieces and I even shed a few tears for him, for Molly, for everything they were and everything they MUST continue to be. Also, there was no surprise for me to encounter the same badass Molly from the previous book. If anything, she became stronger and more confident in her own abilities. She and Dev were like liquid fire whenever they were together, no matter if they were having a fight or the exact opposite *wink*.
I stay pressed against the solid structure as the doors open .
“I’d get some air if I were you. From the feel of it, you seem a little hot and bothered.”
Another thing I love about ”The Divide” is the fact that it continued to make me feel like I was seeing a movie on the big screen, not only reading a book. The scenes were described wonderfully, everything played out so vividly in my own head that I could not get enough of E.J’s imagination. Like I have already said, I have no idea how this woman does it. She must be secretly a ninja unicorn.
The other characters are worth mentioning as well, especially Becca and Rae. These two, together or apart, were amazing and made me laugh so much throughout the entire novel. I really hope that their story will end well in the final book. They deserve their own happy ever after (#shmoopparade, anyone?). Oh, and let’s not forget about Aveline, Dev’s Nocturna partner. She went from being a cold ass bitch to a very likeable character.
I’m pretty sure I left out many other thoughts that I would have liked to share with you all, but I guess that what was of great importance has been mentioned. Without further ado, I highly recommend you to read this amazing, action-packed series and I have no doubt that you will love it as much as I do. While you pick them up and devour them, I’m going to impatiently wait for ”The Destined” to come out and destroy me completely. Because if there’s a thing I know for sure, is that E.J. Mellow will thunderstruck us with it.
