جون ایلیا کے والد شفیق حسن ایلیا کا فن اور ادب سے گہرا تعلق تھا۔ اس ادبی ماحول نے انہیں انہی خطوط پر ڈھالا اور انہوں نے اپنا پہلا اردو شعر اس وقت لکھا جب وہ محض 8 سال کے تھے۔ تقسیم کے بعد ایلیا پاکستان ہجرت کر گئے اور کراچی میں سکونت اختیار کی۔ ایلیا ایک قابل مصنف تھے، لیکن وہ اپنے کام کو شائع کرنے کے لیے قائل نہیں ہو سکے۔ ان کا پہلا شعری مجموعہ "شاید" اس وقت شائع ہوا جب ان کی عمر 60 سال تھی۔ انہوں نے اردو ادبی میگزین "انشا" کی ایڈیٹنگ کی جہاں ان کی ملاقات اردو کی ایک اور مصنفہ زاہدہ حنا سے ہوئی اور آخر کار ان سے شادی کر لی۔ جون اور زاہدہ کی 1980 کی دہائی کے وسط میں طلاق ہو گئی تھی۔ اس نے جون کو تباہ اور اکیلا چھوڑ دیا۔ وہ 8 نومبر 2002 کو انتقال کر گئے۔
